Program Overview

This is a Dual Master’s Degree Program. The student is awarded an MPH Degree from International Telematic University UNINETTUNO, Rome, Italy, and MPH in Preventive Oncology from James Lind Institute, Geneva, Switzerland. The clinical training in preventive oncology is conducted at HCG Cancer hospital, Bangalore, India.

 

It is increasingly being recognized that cancers are preventable and chronic diseases.

A better understanding of the epidemiology and disease biology makes primary and secondary prevention of cancer possible and an important public health concept. Approximately one-half of all cancers are known to develop from modifiable risk factors or can be detected as precursor lesions prior to the development of metastatic disease.

 

The preventive oncology MPH is designed as student-directed learning, problem-solving, and skills development for the practice of public health and preventive oncology. Apart from strengthening skills in public health management, epidemiology, and biostatistics, the program aims at enhancing the skills needed for the development of effective cancer screening and prevention programs.  Training in research methodology is an important component of the program.

 

Students who complete the preventive oncology program find opportunities to work in both community-based cancer prevention units as well as tertiary care oncology centers.

 

The James Lind Institute and the International Telematic University, UNINETTUNO, Rome, Italy (Università Telematica Internazionale UniNettuno ‘UTIU’) have collaborated to bring to you a very unique opportunity to earn a Master’s degree in Public Health via the Master of Science in Public Health Management Program. Alongside this MPH Degree, this program leads to the award of a Master of Preventive Oncology from James Lind Institute.

 

Optional Fellowship Award from HCG Hospitals and James Lind Institute :

 

HCG Hospital Students can further extend their studies for 6 months at HCG Hospitals in Bangalore, India to earn a Fellowship in Preventive Oncology from HCG Hospitals and James Lind Institute. The transfer of students will be coordinated by James Lind Institute. This additional program provides students with a unique opportunity to be placed in one of the most advanced cancer care hospitals in the world. Students complete the fellowship under the supervision of a mentor who is experienced in Preventive Oncology. In addition, students have the opportunity to be involved in several programs and projects run by HCG Hospitals for Preventive Oncology.

 

The Fellowship Program is overseen by Dr. Vinod K Ramani. Dr. Ramani is a Consultant in the Preventive Oncology unit at HCG, Bangalore. He was formerly the Professor, Department of Community Medicine, International Medical School, M.S.Ramaiah campus, Bangalore, INDIA, Associate Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine, Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, INDIA, State NCD Consultant, Non-communicable disease prevention & control Program, Karnataka Health System Development Reforms Project (KHSDRP), Bangalore, INDIA, Associate Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine, Rajarajeswari Medical College & Hospital, Bangalore, INDIA. And Intern, New York State Health Department, Albany, USA. Dr. Ramani is a physician and did his medical training at Bangalore Medical College, INDIA and Doctor of Medicine in Community Medicine at MR Medical College, India and subsequently Master of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA.

Pathway for MPH in Preventive Oncology

 

Stage 1: Complete Master of Science in Public Health Management (MPH)

 

Upon enrollment in this program students will first complete the Advanced Diploma in Public Health Management which typically is completed in 36 weeks and is comprised of 42 ECTS Credits. This program comprises of 18 Core Courses and 3 Elective Courses chosen from a list of Elective Courses available to the student. The student will then transfer to International Telematic University UNINETTUNO, Rome, Italy to complete the MPH program with the award of 90 ECTS Credits. This is explained in detail here.

 

Stage 2: Complete Specialization in Preventive Oncology

 

Upon completion of the MPH program at International Telematic University UNINETTUNO, the student will initiate a specialization in Sexual and Reproductive Health at James Lind Institute. This specialization earns the student a total of 48 ECTS Credits. Combining these 48 ECTS Credits with 42 ECTS credits earned from Advanced Diploma in Public Health Management, a total of 90 ECTS credits leads to the award of MPH in Preventive Oncology  from James Lind Institute, Switzerland.

The MSc Translational Medicine course at JLI equips graduates with an in-depth understanding of the ‘bench to bedside and vice-versa’ paradigm for efficient drug development with a focus on genomic medicine, proteomics, personalized & precision medicine, clinical trial management, regulatory affairs, population health, and epidemiology.
