Overview

Nutrition and dietetics are an important and integral part of any health delivery endeavor. In the context of public health, solving the challenges of nutrition and dietetics play an enormous role in most public health programs. Health and nutrition are intricately related. This applies to individuals who are either healthy or sick, communities, health systems, workplaces, etc.

The MPH in Nutrition and Dietetics program at the James Lind Institute is designed to provide you with a thorough understanding of the challenges that exist in nutrition and health. This program provides you with a strong background in the core concepts of nutrition as well as its linkage to public health. There is also a strong hands-on approach to learning with exposure to skills-based learning on medical aspects of nutrition, the effect of nutrition on the community, food preservation and microbiology, and food safety. This is an intense program and students are expected to have an advanced understanding of nutrition after the completion of the program. Towards the end of the program students complete a project under the mentorship of an expert in Nutrition and Dietetics. There are select opportunities for students to conduct their projects in collaboration with an organization that is involved in nutrition and public health. Mentors help students to find such opportunities for research.

What You Will Study

The program is comprised of 138 ECTS credits and can be completed in about 18 months. For a detailed list of courses taught in this program, please refer to the curriculum.

After completion of 42 credits, an interim qualification of Advanced Diploma in Public Health Management is awarded. This part of your studies only includes coursework.  This is followed by the completion of additional 72 credits via coursework and 24 credits via dissertation under the guidance of a mentor.

How You Will Study

This program is conducted fully online.

Once you are enrolled you will be provided a username and password to login to our e-Campus. All the courses that you are supposed to study will be available in your account. You can log in and complete your courses at any time of your convenience. Study materials are provided in the form of lectures, reading materials, additional videos, research papers, and so on. The faculty can be contacted for any assistance when required. All tests and assignment submissions also take place via the e-Campus. Bachelor's degree (or equivalent / higher)

This program requires a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent recognized academic title, preferably in a life science-related area. If you are unsure about your eligibility, please reach out to our admission staff.

  • A passport size photo (head and shoulders only)
  • Copy of identity proof e.g. a copy of passport or any other government-issued identity card
  • Copy of bachelor's degree or equivalent (degree/higher national diploma etc.)
  • Copy of academic transcripts/marks sheets from the bachelor's degree

Additional requirements if opting for the dual degree pathway:

  • Copy of High School Diploma / Secondary School Certificate

This program is taught in English. Therefore, you should be comfortable in using English as a language of communication (reading, writing and speaking). If you have taken an English language test in the last two years, that is good to have. If not, you can explore a waiver for the English language test.

The English proficiency test is waived-off for the following candidates:

- Native English speakers, OR;
- Applicants who have completed their previous qualifications (e.g. bachelor’s degree) in English language, OR;
- Applicants who have at least 2 years of work experience in an organization in which English is the primary language of communication.

How does it work?

Once you are nearing the completion of your master's degree from James Lind Institute, you will be transferred to our university partner for the completion of the following four additional courses and a dissertation.

  2. Globalization and Public Health Challenges
  3. Public Health Systems and Public Health Policies
  4. Ethical, Cultural and Behavioural Aspects of Health
  5. Final Dissertation/Thesis

JLI will handle all the administrative and transfer requirements on your behalf.

How much time will this take?

It takes an additional 6 to 8 months to complete these and is a great way to earn a 2nd master's degree if you wish to.

Can I take up the dual degree later?

Yes, you can opt for the dual degree pathway later, even after your JLI master's degree completion. It is not required to opt for it right from the start.

Who is this pathway recommended for?

If you are someone who wants to earn two degrees in relatively less time and in a cost-efficient way then you should consider this option. Also, if you are someone who wants to use the master's degree for higher education programs such as a Ph.D. it is highly recommended to opt for this pathway.

The MPH in Nutrition and Dietetics program at JLI has been developed to prepare students to enhance their understanding of nutrition and diet-related aspects of public health. This program utilizes techniques and methodologies for learners to assume roles within the broader public health setting with a focus on community and population health. The roles that are open to aspirants are within the food industry, community healthcare organizations, public healthcare set-ups, media, academia, governments, and non-governmental organizations. Students are expected to develop broad and deep knowledge and skills to advise patients, the general population and policymakers on effective ways to combat the challenges related to nutrition and diet. Students also are exposed to skills that help them find medical roles within tertiary healthcare set-ups to support medical nutrition as part of treatment regimens to patients as part of their care for lifestyle-related diseases, cancer, allergies, etc.

This intense program also equips students to assume roles that are involved in healthcare access with a focus on education and awareness. Areas such as consulting, patient advocacy, access to care, policy development and community education and awareness are strong focus areas in this domain.

Program FAQ's

This program can be completed in about 1.5 to 2 years. It is fully self-paced, so you can increase your pace or go slow based on your time availability.

The primary mode of learning is via pre-recorded lectures, videos, reading materials etc. A few live guest lectures are scheduled during the program however they are optional to attend. Whenever such sessions are scheduled they are planned in a way that is convenient for most of our students. If you are unable to attend, a reccorded version will be provided.

You will be able to interact with the faculty via the personal messaging facility available in your study account, discussion forum, or via emails. A short phone call can also be scheduled if necessary.

A discussion group is available for the program. You can post your questions in the group and other students may respond.

Generally, you do not need to purchase any books. All the resources that you need will be made available by the faculty in your account. If you do wish to have text books, then the faculty can recommend to you some, and you may purchase them on your own,

Each unit within each course will be followed by a short multiple-choice question test. Once you pass, the next unit will activate for you to study. You can take these tests as many times as you need to.

In addition, you will be required to submit assignments for each course. Assignments are like essay or paper writing, usually of 1000 – 1500 words. Guidelines on how to write them will be available in your account.

You can save the pdf study notes that will be provided for each unit. Videos and other multimedia content cannot be downloaded.

Once you are nearning the completion of your coursework, you will work with your mentor to finalize a topic. You will then work on your dissertation under the guidance of your mentor and submit it once complete. The word count required is a minimum of 15000 words. You may be required to defend the dissertation as per the applicable academic policies.

A virtual graduation ceremony may be conducted for which you will be invited to join via video-conferencing. After this the completion documents are sent to your postal address by courier.
